Metal Shelf Dividers vs. Clip-On PLA Brackets
Welded steel shelf dividers are the gold standard for industrial racking. They're also expensive, permanent, and impossible to reconfigure. Here's an honest read on when to pay for metal and when our printed bracket system does the job at a fifth of the cost.
Where metal wins
- →Static heavy loads — automotive parts, steel stock, anything pushing past 50 lbs per partition.
- →Fire-rated environments — PLA softens around 60°C / 140°F. If your facility runs hot, metal is the only call.
- →Permanent layout — if your shelf plan never changes, welded dividers are stronger and last forever.
Where metal hurts
- ×Cost — $15–40 per welded steel divider, before shipping the steel itself.
- ×Install — bolting into rack uprights takes 5–10 minutes per divider and often voids the rack manufacturer's load spec.
- ×Permanence — once installed, repositioning means power tools and patched holes.
- ×Sharp edges — stamped or laser-cut steel edges shred boxes and gloves until you grind them down.
The clip-on bracket alternative
Our PLA bracket is rated for typical warehouse and garage loads (boxed goods, fasteners, light parts, returns processing). It clips onto the front rail without tools and accepts a 4mm cardboard insert as the divider face. At $2.50/ea in bulk + $0.75 for the cardboard, you're at roughly $3.25/divider — about 1/5th the cost of welded steel and with full reconfigurability.
